At the Right Checkpoint:
Foreign Body Inspection Along the Entire Production Line

In the food industry, the position of foreign body inspection often determines product safety, equipment protection, and costs. Our LinkedIn series titled “At the Right Checkpoint” shows why goods receipt, production, and goods outbound each have their own specific detection requirements.

Goods Receipt: Stopping Contamination at the Source

Raw materials are often the primary source of foreign bodies—stones and glass in crops, or metal parts from slaughtering and transport. If they are not detected early, there is a risk of machine damage, downtime, and massive quality losses in further processing. Metal detectors and X-ray systems at goods receipt not only protect the process but also enable clear traceability to individual suppliers.

Production: Increasing Process Reliability

Contamination also occurs during manufacturing—for example, through wear and tear on grinders or bowl cutters in meat processing. Metal separators before vacuum fillers, free-fall separators before packaging systems, or systems in pneumatic conveying lines protect downstream machines. This also reduces costs, as rejecting metals at this stage is significantly cheaper than doing so in the final packaging. Depending on the process, this point may already be a Critical Control Point (CCP).

Goods Outbound: The Final Authority

At the end of the line, inspecting the packaged goods using a metal detector or X-ray system ensures that only flawless products leave the plant. Seamless logging and traceability protect against liability claims. If foreign bodies are only discovered after delivery, there is a risk of complaints, product recalls, high costs, and loss of reputation.

Conclusion

Only those who consistently implement foreign body inspection at all three checkpoints—goods receipt, production, and goods outbound—safeguard process reliability, product quality, and ultimately the trust of business partners and consumers.
